Unfortunately, there are several misconceptions about how habits are formed, including the popular 21 day myth. Building a lasting habit doesn’t follow a fixed timeline. What matters most is finding a way to stay consistent. The good news is that there may be a shortcut. So the real question is, how do you stay consistent when trying to build a new habit, such as budgeting or planning for financial freedom?

At the beginning of the year, three people close to me, Lotana, Jessica, and Mike, made New Year’s resolutions, just like many others. Lotana resolved to read 20 books by the end of the year. Nine months later, she’s on a 276 day reading streak and is now on her fifteenth book. Some of those books are about 400 pages long. When I asked her how she did it, she said, “I just read a few pages every day. Nothing more.”

Jessica, on the other hand, has enrolled in swimming programs several times but is yet to reach her swimming goal. When I asked her what the challenge was, she admitted that she hadn’t put in any extra learning time beyond the training hours. Unlike Lotana, who made reading part of her daily routine, Jessica had relied primarily on her scheduled swimming lessons. She hadn’t yet developed a consistent practice routine outside those sessions.

Lastly, Mike, who had resolved to start gardening, recently shared pictures of the first tomato harvest from his home garden. He said they wouldn’t be buying tomatoes for the next two weeks. Impressive! I told him, “Mike, it must feel really exciting to be able to grow your own food”. He said, “It’s so easy, really. The plants grow themselves. They just need water every day.”

What did Lotana and Mike have in common? Neither tried to accomplish everything at once. They simply focused on doing the small actions they could repeat every day. That’s the shortcut. It’s not about building habits faster. It’s about making consistency easier. Don’t allow yourself to be discouraged by the complexity of the entire journey. Focus instead on the current moment only. Every day, Lotana read just a few pages. Every day, Mike spent a few minutes watering his plants. Days turn into weeks, weeks into months, and months into years of building the desired habit.

The same principle is true for building better financial habits. You don’t have to figure out your entire financial future today. You don’t need to become an expert at budgeting overnight. Start by understanding where your money goes. Make a simple budget for the month. Review your spending regularly. Set aside what you can afford to save, even if the amount seems small. The goal isn’t to transform your finances in a single day. It’s to make better financial decisions consistently, one day at a time. Financial freedom isn’t built by one extraordinary financial decision. It’s built through ordinary decisions repeated consistently over time.

#saldovista #quickbudget #buildwealth #financialfreedom

What Is Your Budget for the Month?

Going on a road trip with friends or loved ones can be a lot of fun.

Going on a road trip with friends or loved ones can be a lot of fun. Making a trip truly memorable costs money, but more importantly, it requires a good plan. For example, everyone needs to be aware of the date and time. They also need to know the venue and pickup spot. A good plan helps to ensure that your trip happens smoothly. The most essential piece of a good plan is the budget.

A budget is a plan for your money.

For some people, a shopping list may have been their earliest practical introduction to budgeting. A shopping list would typically contain the items you intend to get and their estimated prices. Such items may include groceries, clothes, or other household necessities. A good shopping list also specifies how much you intend to spend ahead of time, helping you avoid spending more than planned.

Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support your financial growth.

Although a good shopping list is similar to a budget, it still lacks some of the key components of a budget. For example, a shopping list wouldn’t include your income, whereas a budget requires your income amount to be clearly stated. A shopping list also does not account for savings, whereas a good budget requires you to set aside a specific amount for savings.

Why budget?

Today, social media and artificial intelligence constantly compete for our attention. With so many distractions and opportunities to spend, it is easier than ever to make impulsive financial decisions. Just like a shopping list, a budget helps save time and prevents you from forgetting the things that matter most to you. Our minds are easily drawn toward the things we desire. Having a clear plan, whether that’s a monthly budget or a monthly shopping list helps to keep you focused on achieving your wealth goals.

The challenge, however, is not understanding that a budget is useful. The real challenge is sticking with it. Unfortunately, many people who become aware of the benefits of budgeting begin the process only to abandon it shortly after. Failing to maintain the habit long enough can prevent you from experiencing the full benefits of consistent financial planning over the years. At Saldo Vista, we looked closely at why people struggle to stay the course and built a better way to make budgeting easier to maintain. Now you can always have a clear answer to the simple question, what is your budget?

Thank you for reading Saldo Vista! It was nicely located on the 4th floor of a modern apartment building, overlooking the bustling city avenue, but in that moment I could hardly see or hear any of it. I was neck deep in my own thoughts; to sign or not to sign?

The retail installment contract for the brand new Honda Civic was sitting right there, in the corner beside me. I wanted that car badly! And why not? All my friends had cars, and in fact, even better models. At least with this one, I could proudly join the cruise hangouts, or even get a chance to chauffeur the ladies. I was merely a quick signature away from living my dream, so why am I overthinking this…

Bzzz Bzzz

I picked up my phone, answered the call and it was my dad. What mysterious timing it was to receive a call from him, of all people, in that very moment. Only a few weeks back, he had not been excited about my decision to take up my new job against his wish, yet I would never forget the one great piece of advice he left me with that day.

“Whatever you do, save copiously.”

Whenever I remember that day, I sometimes wonder what made me embrace his advice so wholeheartedly. Fortunately, I did and saved as much as I could. A few years later when good investment opportunities came up, I was able to take advantage of them and make the most of those opportunities. Admittedly, saving all that money, month after month, felt like a huge punishment and truly, it was extremely boring, but as the returns on those investments began to trickle back, it all started to feel worthwhile.

The practical money lesson I learned was that good opportunities may be rare, but they certainly will come your way in due time. The truth is, you rarely have control over when those opportunities will arise. Your best chance of success is to just do the boring stuff and keep saving consistently in preparation for the golden opportunities.

Wouldn’t you rather do the boring bit and save consistently now so that you can eventually enjoy a financially free and exciting life?

Thank you for reading Saldo Vista!
